With white hair, hands and face that bear the marks of time, retired Alzira dos Santos, 78 years old, is a dedicated judo practitioner assisted by the social project “Sport é Segurança”, of the Secretariat of Justice and Public Security (Sejusp) . Age is not an obstacle for the athlete, who overcomes heart health care to keep her body moving.
“The teacher is patient with us, especially with me. He’s always saying ‘Dona Alzira, Dona Alzira’, this is taken care of because of my age. I do heart treatment, but the doctor has allowed me to train, and I say that the heart cannot stop, so I continue to train. Being here for me is a blessing, I gained more autonomy”says the judoka.
For the retired woman, each day of training is an achievement, a feeling she shares with another beneficiary, 64-year-old judoka Lucimar Paixão. She says that she has several health complications and this caused concern in the family when she informed them that she was going to practice judo. Lucimar didn’t give up and already believes that his vitality has only increased.
“I train for my health. I have back problems, high blood pressure, diabetes and labyrinthitis, but after I started training judo, I improved a lot. This is clear now for my daughter who, as soon as I decided to practice this modality, got worried. So I said, ‘I’m going! I can’t stay at home and do nothing.”emphasizes the athlete.
Sport is Safety
Alzira and Lucimar are part of the first group of the best age group of the social project “Sport is Security”, promoted at the Integrated Academy of Training and Improvement (Aifa), in the Marabaixo 2 neighborhood, West Zone of Macapá.
The objective is to be a tool for social inclusion through sport and is carried out jointly with the General Civil Police Station, the Amapaense Judo Federation and the Court of Justice of the State of Amapá (Tjap).
A retired civil police officer, sensei Antônio Viana says that the idea started in 2007. The trainer argues that the practice of physical activities is recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) for maintaining health and improving quality of life at all ages .
“And in the case of the elderly, this care is even more important. It contributes to increasing muscle tone, which is naturally lost with age, and with physical activity we manage to delay this process, working on strength, balance, resistance, in addition to the mind, since they learn to memorize the blows and defenses that have names Japanese, it forces the brain to work”reinforces Viana.
The classes, at first, were aimed at public safety professionals and their dependents, but were later expanded to the community, initially focusing on children at social risk living in the neighboring neighborhoods of Aifa. Now, the project has also embraced the elderly.
