Serasa: divorced people take longer to pay debts – 12/25/2023 – Market

Divorced people are the Brazilians who carry debts for the longest time, according to a Serasa survey carried out at the request of Sheet.

Among debtors who are separated, 49% have carried the debt for more than two years, above the average of 46% identified by the survey. Those with accounts in arrears between six months and two years account for 36%.

Divorced people are also the least confident that they will be able to pay off their debt: 71% of them said they will be able to meet their commitments, compared to an average of 73%. Another 6% of divorcees said they had already given up paying their debts.

There were 11,541 interviews with defaulters registered in the Serasa database during October 2023, 52% men and 48% women, in partnership with the research institute Opinion Box.

Of these debtors, the majority are single (44%), then married (42%), divorced (12%) and, finally, widowed (2%).

The range of indebted singles and widowers is the same as in the survey carried out by Serasa in 2022. Married people, however, were 37% last year.

In terms of age, 24% of those in debt are between 41 and 49 years old, 21% from 50 to 60, 28% from 31 to 40. Elderly people and young people up to 24 years old account for 7% each. From 25 to 30, it’s 13%.

For the majority, the debt came as a result of unemployment or a reduction in income, via credit card or store credit, the famous retailers’ booklet.

For 53% of the total, basic bills, such as water, electricity and gas, are the biggest monthly expense, and 74% of those in debt have had these debts outstanding for more than a year. However, 21% do not know the importance they have in their budgets.

They weigh so heavily that 83% have already delayed paying other bills to prioritize basic bills and 61% have already borrowed money from friends or family to pay them off, in addition to 49% having also taken out a loan to pay basic bills and 45% They have already had their service cut off due to late payment.
