The Senate approved this Thursday (24), in a symbolic way, Provisional Measure 1.172/23 that readjusts the minimum wage and expands the range of exemption from the Income Tax table. The text, approved yesterday by the Chamber, establishes an appreciation policy through real increases, linked to economic growth and inflation.
The text was edited by the May 1st government and increased the minimum wage from R$1,302 to R$1,320. The rapporteur for the matter in the joint committee, deputy Merlong Solano (PT-PI), incorporated the readjustment of the Individual Income Tax (IRPF) exemption range into the provisional measure.
The proposal provides for exemption from income tax for those who earn up to two monthly minimum wages (R$ 2,640). Currently, exemption is possible for those who earn up to R$ 1,903. After an agreement between parliamentarians, taxation on income from investments abroad, trust or offshore funds was excluded from the text by means of a highlight in plenary and should be addressed in a bill.
The rules of the provisional measures come into force as soon as they are published in the “Official Gazette”, but become definitive laws after approval by Congress.
