Senator Eduardo Girão (Novo) stated that the excesses of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) can be contained and the balance between the powers of the Republic reestablished if the Chamber of Deputies approves a Proposed Amendment to the Constitution (PEC) that extinguishes the privileged forum of parliamentarians. The statement was given by the senator to journalists from People’s Gazette in the Capital Subject program.
The Proposed Amendment to the Constitution by former Senator Alvaro Dias (Podemos-PR) was unanimously approved in 2017 in the Senate, but is currently shelved in the Chamber. It causes any crimes committed by senators and other civil servants to be tried in the first instance of Justice.
“This is the mechanism. Because today there are many parliamentarians who are afraid. Because their processes, because of the privileged forum, are in the hands of the ministers of the Supreme Court. And the processes of the ministers of the Supreme Court are in the hands of the parliamentarians. the other”.
That would be the reason why senators are not currently discussing the possibility of opening impeachment proceedings against Supreme Court ministers on account of excesses such as decisions that restrict freedom of expression, political arrests and impeachment of parliamentarians.
“When the people, society, demand from their federal deputies to put this on the table and vote and if we approve the end of the forum, shielding and corruption in Brazil will end”, said Girão.
He was one of the few senators who publicly opposed the impeachment of former deputy Deltan Dallagnol, the appointment of Cristiano Zanin, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s lawyer, to the STF and the search and seizure warrants against Senator Marcos do Val.
