See winners of international portrait competition – 08/29/2023 – New in Sheet

The international photography contest The International Portrair Photographer of the Year awarded this month the best portrait photographers.

The big winner was the Iranian Forough Yavari, who now lives in Australia. Photographs of her are influenced by her personal experiences as a woman raised in a Middle Eastern country. She also draws inspiration from other women’s stories.

In one of the pictures made by Yavari, titled “Salvation”, she portrayed a Ghanaian woman named Mersi. Realizing that the model was sad and inhibited, the photographer put on some music for her to let go and began to record the moment. The final image shows various versions and moves of Mersi dancing with herself.

In addition to the main prize, the contest had four other thematic categories – character studies, ambient portraits, family portraits and portraits that tell stories. All the winning photos in the contest can be seen in the gallery below.

The main prize is US$ 3,000, equivalent to approximately R$ 14,700. In the other categories, the winners received US$ 1,000, while the runners-up received US$ 500 and the third-placed received a bonus of US$ 250.

In the character study category, the winner was the British Frederic Aranda. In second and third place were, respectively, Elena Paraskeva, from Cyprus, and Paul Dodd, from Australia.

Among the environmental photographs, the first place went to the British Jo Kearney, followed by Mark Cornelison, from the United States, and Peter Rossi, from Australia.

The winner of the family portraits was Australian Raoul Slater. In second place was the Filipino Donell Gumiran and in third place, the Australian Peter Rossi.

Finally, in the category of portraits that tell stories, first place went to Joseph Smith of Malta. In second place came Osama Elolemy, from the United Arab Emirates, and in third place was Irishman John Sheridan.

Even without a cash prize, the 101 photos considered the best by the jury also win space in an annual book produced by the publication. The digital version of the publication can be seen on the competition website.
