The first day of the National High School Exam (Enem) 2023 was held this Sunday (5), and the second day of the test will be on November 12th. Almost 4 million students take the test that assesses their academic performance and is one of the gateways to higher education.

On this first day of the test, in addition to answering questions on Natural Sciences and its Technologies, the students had to write an essay on the theme “Challenges for tackling the invisibility of care work carried out by women in Brazil”. The text (up to 30 lines) must be dissertation-argumentative. In other words, ideas need to be supported by reasoned explanations and arguments on the subject.

The theme of the essay was praised by feminist parliamentarians, such as deputy Sâmia Bomfim (PSOL-SP), and by the first lady, Janja da Silva, on social media. “I loved the #Enem2023 essay theme. A difficult topic, because the politics of care is still very recent and the debate is just beginning, but it is urgent and extremely important that we talk about the invisibility of women’s care work in Brazil”, wrote Janja.

In the sociology part, students had to answer questions about gender, women’s conditions and the Maria da Penha Law. According to the UOLone of the questions also talked about the participation of the first trans woman in the Tokyo Olympics.

Among the new features of the exam this year, the Minister of Education, Camilo Santana, cited the colorful images, as well as an expanded answer card and essay sheet for the visually impaired. The minister also guaranteed that there was no type of government interference in the Enem content.

Regarding the students, who were unable to take the test due to weather conditions, the MEC informed that they will be able to participate in Enem in the reapplication of new tests on December 12th and 13th.

In the morning, President Lula visited the headquarters of the National Institute of Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira (Inep), an agency of the Ministry of Education (MEC), responsible for applying the Enem. On the occasion, Lula praised the increase in registrations for Enem and highlighted the participation of women, who represent the majority among those registered for the 2023 test. He also said, in a joking tone, that he can sign up for a future edition of the test to take a higher education course in economics.

“I hope that, from now on, more young people will sign up for Enem. And adults and the elderly too. Who knows, maybe one of these days I’ll even sign up to take an Economics course. Course taught by very knowledgeable people”, wrote Lula on the X network, formerly Twitter.

Late this Sunday afternoon, INEP reported that it had contacted the Federal Police to investigate a possible leak of the Enem 2023 test. The announcement was made, after receiving an image of the test that began circulating on social media, at around 1:30 p.m., 30 minutes after the start of the test, cell phone access is prohibited.
