Enem has questions about dictatorship, Paulo Freire and Palestine – 11/05/2023 – Education

The questions on the first day of Enem once again addressed content about the period of the military dictatorship in Brazil. Enem spent three years without raising questions about this period in the country’s history, during the government of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

Until then, the dictatorship had been addressed in all editions of the exam since 2009. In this Sunday’s test (5), at least two questions directly addressed the period.

Defender of the dictatorship, Bolsonaro proposed that Enem treat the 1964 military coup as a revolution, as revealed by the Sheet.

The questions also addressed the history of Palestine, migration of Jews to Brazil, machismo, appreciation of indigenous identity and racism.

The exam also brought excerpts from books by pedagogue Paulo Freire and writers Conceição Evaristo and Itamar Vieira Júnior. Another question brought the song ‘Alegria, Alegria’, by Caetano Veloso.

Teachers evaluated the return of this type of content to the test as positive. “Enem no longer has holes in the history of Brazil, all important periods in our history have been charged again”, said Giba Alvarez, director of the Poli course.

He explains that, due to the importance of Enem, the topics covered in the test become more valued to be taught in the classroom. “When subjects are included in Enem, they are valued in the high school curriculum,” he said.

For Rodrigo Basilio, history teacher at Poliedro, the test followed the trend of recent years, with a less content-based and more interpretative approach.

“Many questions addressed gender inequality and the role of women in history. Several questions also spoke about the importance of valuing popular culture, with the idea of ​​plurality of culture as opposed to an idea of ​​hegemonic culture, of elites”, he said Basilio.

Teachers also highlighted the presence of themes linked to the environment.

“We had many questions linked to environmental issues, talking about climate change, global warming, deforestation in the Amazon, substantially also land grabbing, in addition to questions about soil degradation, sustainable model, agroforestry system”, says geography professor Althieres Lima, from SEB Lafaiete School.

This Sunday (5), students answered 90 questions from the human sciences and languages ​​tests. They also had to write an essay, the theme of which was “Challenges for tackling the invisibility of care work carried out by women in Brazil”.
