See Barroso clashes with Bolsonaro allies – 07/13/2023 – Politics

The speech by STF (Federal Supreme Court) Minister Luís Roberto Barroso about Bolsonarism at a UNE (National Union of Students) congress this Wednesday (12) had strong repercussions among politicians allied with former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and resurrected an old conflict.

Deputies such as Nikolas Ferreiras (PL-MG) and Bia Kicis (PL-DF) stated that the opposition will file an impeachment request against the minister, on the grounds that he carried out party-political activity.

While he was booed by some of the students, who protested against his participation in the event in Brasilia, Barroso said that “we defeated Bolsonarism”.

The speech adds to other controversies in recent years between the STF minister and Bolsonaro’s allies, who have already included episodes such as the phrase “perdeu, mané”.

During a lecture to students in Salvador, on November 25, Barroso mocked Bolsonarists by repeating that it was necessary to respect the result of the 2022 elections. “The result has to be respected. It’s undemocratic.”

The minister made reference to part of Bolsonaro’s voters who, after the former president’s defeat, camped in barracks in various parts of the country asking for a military coup. In Porto Alegre, some demonstrators had rehearsed a cry for help with their cell phone flashlights pointed at the sky. The case reverberated on social networks as a request for help to extraterrestrials.

3) Siege in a restaurant

A group of Bolsonaristas surrounded a restaurant and the house where Barroso was staying on a trip to Santa Catarina on November 3 last year.

The minister had to leave the restaurant in Porto Belo, on the coast of the state, escorted. Protesters called Barroso a “trash”, a “thief” and a “vagabond”, in addition to saying that “the people are supreme” and “an election is not won, it is taken”.

4) Armed Forces

On April 24, 2022, Barroso stated that the Armed Forces were being targeted to attack the electoral system, indicating its political use by Bolsonaro.

In addition to the reaction of Bolsonarists, the phrase generated a protest from the Ministry of Defense, which manifested itself in a note classifying the allegation as irresponsible and offensive. After the incident, the minister said that he would not respond to the folder’s note, but that he did not regret the statement.

5) Cursing

At an event with Santa Catarina supporters on August 6, 2021, Bolsonaro hinted that Barroso had sent people to harass him and called the minister a “son of a bitch”. Later, he attacked him again, but denying it was an attack.

“I did not offend any Supreme Court minister, I just spoke about Mr Barroso’s file, defender of the terrorist [Cesare] Battisti, in favor of abortion, the liberation of drugs, the reduction of the age for rape of vulnerable people. He wants our 12-year-old daughters and granddaughters to have sex without any problems. This same minister voted for mistresses’ rights,” he said.
