Manaus (AM) – Highlighted at the Amazonas International Relations Congress, the article entitled “The implementation of Public Policies for the Indigenous Peoples of Amazonas: A Pelci governmental approach”, was chosen to compose a chapter of the book “Power in global politics” . The research reinforced sport as a public policy tool and the importance of cultural appreciation of indigenous peoples in the interior of the state.
“Having this publication about Pelci just shows how much we are on the right path. As determined by Governor Wilson Lima, we are working hard to ensure that this Program continues to be a reference for public policies for society in general”,
highlighted Jorge Oliveira, Secretary of State for Sports and Leisure (Sedel).
The article developed by the Scientific Center of Sedel and the State University of Amazonas (UEA), recognizes the implementation of public policies for indigenous peoples.
“At the moment we begin to realize the realization of rights for the indigenous population, when it comes to sport and leisure, we highlight the social impact, strengthening that, through this program, we have public policies that effectively and concretely demonstrate the right of these people,”
commented Professor Marcelo Marques, PhD in Biodynamics of Physical Education and Sport from the University of São Paulo (USP) and coordinator of the Sedel Scientific Center.
The article, which will be published as a book in 2024, also reinforced that within the Amazon, indigenous peoples have a cultural and particular vision about body care, sport and leisure. The work shows that thinking about public policies aimed at these ethnicities means valuing indigenous culture, since the government program adapts to the reality of the community.
A national reference, Pelci has seven centers, in Manaus, Codajás, Envira, Fonte Boa, Humaitá, São Gabriel da Cachoeira and Tabatinga. Indigenous groups are present, specifically, in the municipalities of São Gabriel da Cachoeira and Tabatinga, bringing together more than 1,200 athletes from different ethnicities.
“Pelci is in several locations, positively impacting the lives of indigenous children and adolescents. Thinking about public policies in this way is investing in an Amazonian policy, with Amazonians, for Amazonians, this is the program’s biggest difference,”
commented the researcher.
