School Games 2023: more than 6 thousand students will be participating in Olympic and Paralympic competitions – News of Brazil

The Government of Amapá launched the 2023 School Games, a competition that has around 6,200 student-athletes registered across the state. Last Tuesday (13) the Governor, Clécio Luís, and the Government team received part of these young people at the Palácio do Setentrião, in Macapá, to mark the beginning of the event.
There are students from more than 120 public and private schools who will participate in collective and individual tournaments, including Olympic and Paralympic competitions. The Government allocated R$ 1.3 million to carry out the School Games.
“This is an activity that engages everyone, children, youth, teachers and the school community. Today, we also granted another 32 airline tickets for our athletes to participate in competitions in other states. This is how we encourage sports and, at the same time, rescue lives, self-esteem and well-being”, emphasized Clécio Luís.
The ceremony was attended by athletes from Amapa who won medals in various competitions, such as Alexandre Lacabanne, 14 years old. He is in the 9th grade at the José do Patrocínio State School and has already won a gold medal in the under-64 kg (under-15) judo category in the municipal disputes of the 2023 School Games.
“This was my 5th judo championship and my 4th medal. Sport means a lot in my life. In addition to physical activity improving health, judo helps me socialize, interact with other people, and also occupies my mind and distracts me from problems. I love the sport. The medals demonstrate that I made an effort and was the best in my category”, he commented.
With his neck full of medals, 16-year-old para-athlete Luiz Felipe Santana is excited to participate in the School Games for the second time. In the F34 category of athletics in the Paralympic competition, he represents the Antônio Munhoz Lopes State School, in Conjunto Macapaba.
“I’m in 15th place in the national ranking and I’m focused on reaching a new mark, surpassing my opponents. I’m going to keep training a lot, and take the gold home”, said the student.
Opportunities
The Amapaense School Games are held by the Government of the State of Amapá, through the State Secretariat for Sports and Leisure (Sedel) and the State Secretariat for Education (Seed), with the support of the Amapaense Federation of School Sports (Fade) and of sports federations.
At the tryouts in Macapá, matches take place at the Military Police Gymnasiums and Avertino Ramos, and on the courts of the State Schools Santina Rioli, Gabriel de Almeida Café, Deusolina Salles Farias and Colégio Amapaense.
“These students break barriers, they are taking our Amapá to other states and to the world. There is a whole team here giving all the support, along with teachers and family members. Investing in sport is investing in the future of our country”, expressed the Secretary of Education, Sandra Casimiro.
Marcos Nunes, acting secretary at Sedel, pointed out that the 2023 edition of the School Games should be the most disputed in recent years, as it had a record number of students enrolled.
“We reached almost every municipality. At the moment, selections are taking place in schools. We are sure that school games are an investment in the future of our children and young people, who have the dream of sport, in personal and collective development. This Government initiative helps to rescue values, and brings discipline. Great athletes will be born through the School Games”, he said.
Phases
The competition takes place in two stages before the national dispute: the municipal is the first stage and occurs only with games in the collective modality; and the state stage, which began last weekend, involving other sports. The state selective will also receive the champions of collective sports in the municipalities.
The municipal stage takes place until June 19th and the state stage, from June 26th to 30th. The gold medalists will represent Amapá in the Brazilian School Games from 12 to 14 years old, and in the Youth School Games from 15 to 17 years old.
