Police in Spain said they identified two separate networks that allegedly applied scams mainly to Brazilian families, promising to turn their children into elite soccer players.
Gangs are accused of selling “false expectations” to families.
According to the police, they charged an initial fee of more than €5,000 (approximately R$27,000) and then monthly payments of up to €1,700 (approximately R$9,000) per player.
About 70 families were tricked and 11 people were arrested, according to authorities.
Families were informed that the money would be used to cover expenses, including tuition, housing and documentation to obtain a residence permit in the city of Granada.
However, in reality, the players “lived in houses… in precarious conditions, with little food, and none of them managed to obtain legal residency” in Spain, reads an excerpt from the statement.
Most of the players were Brazilian, aged between 16 and 23 years old.
The gangs – which operate independently of one another – shared responsibilities internally, according to police.
Some gang members focused on recruitment, targeting wealthy families in their home countries. The second group was involved in educational centers that faked registration certificates so that players could obtain visas.
A third management group oversaw overall strategy.
The investigation began after one of the players filed a complaint with the police.
