The inclusion of businessman Elon Musk, owner of the social network X (formerly Twitter), as investigated in the investigation investigating the existence of anti-democratic digital militias and their financing made him gain popularity in Brazil.

Data from Google Trends shows that Musk had a peak in searches in the week of April 7th to 13th, the period in which Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the STF (Supreme Federal Court), determined this measure. The data covers the period of the last five years.

The businessman was more sought after here due to the inquiry than when he reached an agreement to buy Twitter in April 2022. The accepted offer was US$44 billion (R$214 billion).

The investigations in this inquiry also cover the coup plot after Lula’s (PT) victory in the 2022 elections, the sale of jewelry presented by authorities to Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and the case of vaccine card forgery.

According to the minister, the measure is justified by the “intentional criminal exploitation” of the network and in view of the disinformation campaign about the actions of the STF and the TSE (Superior Electoral Court), “instigating disobedience and obstruction of Justice”.

The measure occurred after a series of statements by Musk related to Brazil. The businessman even said that he was “lifting restrictions” on his network imposed by court decisions, in addition to arguing that Moraes should resign or be impeached.
