Santos announces Alexandre Gallo as Falcão’s replacement

O saints he chose Alexandre Gallo to assume the position of technical coordinator in place of Paulo Roberto Falcão, who resigned last week amid an accusation of sexual harassment. As informed by the club from the coast of São Paulo this Wednesday (9), the new professional starts working at CT Rei Pelé from Thursday (10).

A former midfielder, Gallo captained Santos in the Brazilian vice-championship in 1995. After retiring from the field, he returned to the team as an assistant to Vanderlei Luxemburgo in 2004, the year of the last Brazilian title won by Santos. Upon leaving Vila Belmiro, he began his career as a coach at Vila Nova.

In the following season, when Luxemburgo went to Real Madrid, Gallo left Portuguesa, the team he was training at the time, to take over as alvinegro coach. “We are bringing a professional with identification with Santos, who has already lived a lot in this team and who didn’t think twice about accepting this challenge”, said president Andrés Rueda.

With work at teams such as Internacional, Atlético-MG and Bahia, Alexandre Gallo was also coach of the Brazilian under-20 team. In 2017, he was director of football at Atlético-MG. Upon leaving the Belo Horizonte club, he returned to work as a coach and went through São Caetano, Botafogo-SP, Santa Cruz and Cianorte. His last job was at Londrina, a team he left in May of this year.

Santos experienced troubled days last week. On Friday, an employee at the hotel where Paulo Roberto Falcão lived on the coast of São Paulo filed a police report against him, accusing him of sexual harassment.

A few hours after the case came to light, the former midfielder resigned “out of respect for the fans, for the recent protests in the face of the team’s performance on the field”, as he said in an official note published on his Instagram. “About the accusation made this Friday, which I received with surprise by the media, I say that it did not happen,” he added.

On Sunday (6), it was the turn of coach Paulo Turra to be fired, after a 1-1 draw with Athletico, the day before. Uruguayan Diego Aguirre was hired for the position and will be officially presented this Wednesday.
