Salles was never a candidate for mayor of SP, says Valdemar – 05/06/2023 – Panel

The national president of the PL, Valdemar Costa Neto, said that federal deputy Ricardo Salles (PL-SP) never talked to him about running for mayor of São Paulo.

“He was never a candidate. We never discussed this matter. He never spoke to me, he never raised the candidacy issue with me. I am not the owner of the party, but I think it would have been normal for him to have spoken to me”, said Valdemar to the Panel.

This Monday (5), Salles announced his withdrawal from the candidacy, due to the fact that the PL tends to support the re-election of Mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB). He said that “the center won and the right lost”.

Valdemar said that an “extreme right” candidacy like Sales would give victory to Guilherme Boulos (PSOL) for mayor. In the view of the leader of the PL, this would even pave the way for a possible presidential candidacy for the psolist party in 2026.

“With the structure of São Paulo, he is a candidate for president in two years, then he buries us for good. We have to have a center-right candidacy,” he said. Although he did not mention it, one possibility would be support for Nunes. Another, as revealed by the Panel, is to launch Senator Astronauta Marcos Pontes (PL).

According to Valdemar, São Paulo is a city that tends to the left. “We already had Erundina, Marta and Haddad mayors. Bolsonaro, Tarcísio and Marcos Pontes lost in the city. That’s why the extreme right cannot win alone”, he said.
