Sales of brand new cars grew 9.13% in 2023 compared to the previous year, according to data released this Thursday (4) by Fenabrave (National Federation of Motor Vehicle Distribution). Considering light commercial vehicles, the increase was 11.3%.

In total, 2.18 million vehicles in both categories were registered last year, 1.72 million cars and 458,522 light commercial vehicles.

In December alone, Brazil registered 187,753 cars and 48,846 light commercial vehicles, increases of 16.84% and 19.25% compared to November.

Motorcycle sales saw an even more significant increase in 2023, up 16.10% year-on-year, reaching 1.58 million registered vehicles. There were 132,752 motorcycles registered in December, an increase of 1.75% compared to the previous month.

Bus registration also grew. 24,622 vehicles were registered, an increase of 12.63% on an annual basis. In the month of December, however, there was a drop of 3.45% compared to the previous month, and a drop of almost 30% compared to the same period in 2022.

Trucks were the only vehicles that registered a drop in sales in 202, of 16.39%, totaling 104,155 registered vehicles. Even so, Fenabrave emphasizes that this drop was below expectations.

In projections for 2024, Fenabrave expects a 12% increase in car sales, totaling 2.44 million registered cars and light commercial vehicles.

For motorcycles, the expected increase is 16%, and Brazil should register a total of 1.83 million vehicles in this category, according to the federation’s estimate.

In relation to trucks, the expected increase is 10%, and for buses, Fenabrave projects a 20% increase in registrations.
