Brazilian women’s rugby sevens has stamped its passport towards the Paris Olympics and will be one of the 12 teams to compete in the main world sporting competition. The Yaras, as the women’s team is known, were awarded the Olympic spot this Sunday (18), by winning the title of the South American Championship in Montevideo (Uruguay) in advance, maintaining an unbeaten record of 21 years in the competition. In addition to the Yaras, teams from France, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and the United States have already secured an Olympic spot.
The undefeated campaign in the South American Championship, a running points competition, began with a 17-5 victory for Brazil against Argentina in the opening match. In the sequence, they defeated Paraguay (27 to 0), Uruguay (48 to 0) and today Chile. Colombia, the last opponent, lost the last games to Chile (22 to 0) and Uruguay (17 to 12) and has no more chances of sticking in Brazil.
The 21st South American title crowns a sovereign trajectory of the Yaras since the beginning of the competition: the team won all editions, except the 2015 (Pre-Olympic for Rio 2016), as they already had a guaranteed place as host country.
