Róger Guedes accepts a millionaire proposal and no longer plays for Corinthians

After weeks of tension, Roger Guedes accepted this Tuesday (1st) the millionaire proposal of the Al-Rayyanfrom Qatar, and no longer plays for Corinthians. Since the weekend, in the match against Vasco, the player already gave indications that he would leave the club in this transfer window.

The number 10 leaves Brazil as the top scorer at Neo Química Arena, with 31 goals, and with 21 balls in the net this season.

In the last month, Guedes was probed by clubs in Saudi Arabia, such as Al-Nassr and Al-Hilal, before making his move to Al-Rayyan. Corinthians even negotiated a contractual extension with the striker, without success. He will travel to Qatar in the coming days.

Corinthians will also not have the 26-year-old player for the second leg of the semifinal of the Copa do Brasil, against São Paulo, on August 16th. Negotiation values ​​have not yet been disclosed, but could exceed R$ 50 million. Corinthians, in agreement with the striker in 2021, is entitled to 40% of this amount; the other 60% is in player possession.

Róger Guedes arrived at Corinthians in 2021 after terminating his contract with China’s Shandong Luneng. In three seasons, he played 126 games, with 44 goals and another ten assists. In the last match, against Vasco, for the Brasileirão, he scored his 31st goal at the Neo Química Arena, becoming the stadium’s top scorer. On the occasion, he did not have the opportunity to say goodbye to the alvinegro fan, since the game did not have the presence of an audience – the club was punished for homophobic chants in the match against São Paulo, in May.

At various times, the striker stated that his goal was to be champion for Corinthians. In 2021, he arrived with shirt number 123; the following year, he started to use the number 9, for the Libertadores dispute. With the departure of Willian, he took over the 10, which becomes vacant from the striker’s departure.

After the match against Vasco, last Saturday (29), the player was asked about his future at Corinthians. He did not rule out leaving and just said that he was “focused” for the next few games of the season and even stated that he would like to be related to the game against Newell’s – something that did not happen.

Before Qatar’s proposal, Duílio Monteiro Alves, president of the club, stated that Corinthians did not intend to sell Guedes in this transfer window. “Róger Guedes has always been in demand and has been having an excellent year. But Corinthians has no intention of selling and the idea is that Roger will remain here with us”, he said.

At Al-Rayyan, Guedes will be joined by two other Brazilians: Thiago Mendes, formerly of São Paulo, and Gabriel Pereira, revealed by Corinthians.
