Roberto Cidade’s PL institutes ‘Law of Incentive, Protection and Respect for Cyclists’

The proposal aims to encourage the use of bicycles as a sustainable alternative means of transport.
One of the main problems of large Brazilian cities, urban mobility is a topic that deserves the attention of all public agents. And, to contribute to the problem, the president of the Legislative Assembly of Amazonas (Aleam), state deputy Roberto Cidade (UB), presented Bill No. 675/2023, which establishes the Law of Incentive, Protection and Respect for Cyclists in scope of the State of Amazonas.
The proposal aims to encourage the use of bicycles as a sustainable alternative means of transport, or as a sport and leisure activity; promote the improvement of the health and well-being of citizens through the promotion of leisure and physical activity; encourage appreciation of the culture and tourist and ecological attractions of the Amazon; promote the development of local productive arrangements and the movement of the economy of the State and its municipalities through the various cycling modalities; encourage mobility and accessibility and encourage respect for the rights of cyclists.
“One of the main proposals of this Law is to encourage the use of bicycles as a sustainable means of transport. Cycling is a clean and efficient alternative, contributing to the reduction of polluting gas emissions and congestion in cities. By promoting the creation of safe bike paths, lanes and bike racks, the project encourages the population to use bicycles, contributing to the improvement of urban mobility and the quality of life of citizens”

The PL also establishes August 19 as the “State Day of Respect for Cyclists”, with the promotion of activities that encourage the use of bicycles as a means of sport and sustainable transport. The proposal also aims to establish cycling routes with the interconnection between existing tourism systems and rural and urban cycling infrastructure.
“Another relevant point is the development of safe and well-signposted cycling routes that cross the region’s landscapes, connecting areas of tourist, cultural and ecological interest. Cycling tourism, when encouraged, promotes a closer interaction between visitors and nature and local communities, contributing to the generation of jobs and income in these areas. In addition, the initiative aims to sensitize the population and tourists to the importance of environmental conservation and the preservation of the State’s natural resources”
