Manaus (AM) – The first season of the “Série Rio Negro Sinfônicos Concertos” ends its 2023 activities with the last free concert held by the Orquestra Pró Cultura do Amazonas, this Thursday (28), at 8 pm, at Teatro Amazonas.

The fourth concert of the season will highlight the composer from Pernambuco, based in Amazonas for 27 years, Timóteo Esteves, with the work “À Brasiliana”. The composition received the first prize by the Claude Brendel Brazil-France 2022 Academy and talks about Brazil and Brazilian rhythms, such as maracatu, samba and MPB.

Timóteo Esteves is also a cellist and pedagogue graduated from the Federal University of Amazonas. He began studying cello with master Emília Valova, at the Liceu de Artes e Ofícios Cláudio Santoro. He had the world premiere with his composition “Vindouro” at the 8th Ouro Branco Cello Festival, Minas Gerais, in 2022. He has been a member of the Amazonas Filarmônica for over ten years.

To Brasiliana

The work is divided into three movements: Brasiliana, Jornada Etérea and Saudoso Carnaval.

According to the composer, the first movement presents evolutionary chords using the harp and guitar. The woods and strings are together in this harmony. After a brief introduction, with the movement of Brazilian rhythms, the cuíca and a large Brazilian batucada enter.

“The second movement is about the passage from this life to another. Death is such a delicate and avoided subject, but I had great losses that led me to the emotions necessary to write this movement”,

explains Timóteo Esteves.

According to the composer, despite being a slow movement, he chose to give rhythmic effervescence to generate more impact on the melody. “The song has some phrases that I chose to do in unison, these phrases are like a big tearful lament. The song ends abruptly like a heart stopping, the eardrum makes the sound of the heart and the woodwinds make the beep of the machine that goes out of rhythm until it fatally stops beating”, defines the composer.

The third movement has a samba characteristic, very rhythmic with harmonies and melodies that change a lot. The timpani and snare are striking, reminiscent of samba school drums, in addition to the frullato on the flutes. The novelty in this movement is the use of the whistle to call certain evolutions. The melodies are tender and delicate, they wander between the instruments and the use of the harp.

Dvořák and Wagner

The opening of the year-end concert will feature the work of symphony number 8, in G major opus 88, by Antonín Dvořák. Composed in 1889, to commemorate Dvořák’s admission to the Bohemian Academy of Sciences, Literature and Arts. It was also dedicated to Emperor Franz Joseph for encouraging the arts.

Next, Orquestra Pró Cultura will present “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg” (The Master Singers of Nuremberg) by German composer Richard Wagner. The work is a comic opera in three acts.
