Rio de Janeiro prohibits the use of terms social and service in elevators

The mayor of Rio de Janeiro Eduardo Paes (PSD) signed a law that prohibits the terms “social elevator” and “service elevator” on city buildings. The law was published this Tuesday (4th) and aims to “curb any type of discrimination”, in addition to providing “dynamism in access to private establishments”. According to the text, there is an exception for elevators used exclusively for the transport of loads.

In case of non-compliance with the law, the establishment will be warned at the first moment and may be subject to a fine of R$ 5 thousand. The value will be updated by the Special Extended Consumer Price Index (IPCA-E). Another law from 2003 already prohibited any type of discrimination in elevators in the city of Rio de Janeiro.

Although it is already in force, the norm needs to be regulated to define all the application and inspection rules.
