Rio de Janeiro hosts a coffee festival next weekend with tastings, workshops and even musical performances.
Rio Coffee Nation reaches its fourth edition, this time at Pier Mauá, in the center of the capital of Rio de Janeiro.
More than 50 producers from various coffee regions in Brazil are expected to exhibit their products at the event, which will also be attended by European guests, such as Veda Viraswami, head of roasting at Le Café Alain Ducasse.
In addition to tastings and lectures, the program includes workshops ranging from cocktails made with coffee to a 1h30min class on how to prepare coffee and hazelnut cookies.
There will also be workshops on introduction to tasting, how to open a café and how to pair coffees, among others.
The ticket gives access to the general pavilion, where the exhibitors are located. To participate in the workshops, you must purchase a specific ticket – prices vary.
According to Martina Barth d’Avila, responsible for producing the event, Rio Coffee Nation is focused on specialty and organic coffees and will have a fully sustainable structure – there will be carbon compensation for the emissions necessary to hold the festival.
One of the pillars of the event is to highlight small producers – although large companies in the sector also participate. Therefore, all exhibitors will occupy a stand of the same format, regardless of size.
Rubens Vuolo wins national filtered coffee championship
Barista Rubens Vuolo, from Amado Grão, in Cuiabá (MT), is the new Brazilian champion of brewed coffee. He beat 19 professionals in the Brazilian Brewers Cup Championship, held in Curitiba, between October 12th and 14th.
The champion coffee served by Vuolo was a mixture of beans from the bourbon rosa varieties –grown at Fazenda Um– and laurina –produced by Fazenda Daterra.
Daniel Vaz, from Rio de Janeiro’s Five Roasters, and Tiago de Mello, from São Paulo’s Pato Rei, completed the podium.
The championship is organized by the Brazilian Specialty Coffee Association (BSCA), in partnership with Apex (Brazilian Export and Investment Promotion Agency).
