Right and left politicians mourn the execution of Sâmia’s brother and colleagues in RJ

The death of orthopedic doctor Diego Ralf Bomfim, 35 years old, brother of federal deputy Sâmia Bomfim (PSOL-SP), in the early hours of this Thursday (5) in Rio de Janeiro, was lamented by government and opposition politicians. The crime also killed doctors Perseu Ribeiro de Almeida and Marcos Corsato, aged 63, who were participating in an international conference in the city and were in a kiosk on the beach when they were executed.

Parliamentarians and ministers mourned the death of the doctor, who is also the brother-in-law of deputy Glauber Braga (PSOL-RJ). He and Sâmia did not comment on the crime until the end of this report.

The mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes, paid his condolences to the deputy and said he hoped that the “crime would soon be clarified by the police forces”.

The deputy’s supporter and countryman, Pastor Henrique Vieira, offered solidarity to the parliamentarian’s family and friends, echoing a post from Minister Flávio Dino, of Justice.

“I ordered the Federal Police to monitor the investigations into the execution of doctors in Rio. After these initial immediate measures, we will legally analyze the case. My solidarity with Congresswoman Sâmia, Congressman Glauber and their families”, said Dino.

Senator Jaques Wagner (PT-BA), from the government base, said he was “appalled” by the executions, and highlighted the monitoring by the Ministry of Justice “so that those responsible are identified and punished”.

“Support and solidarity with comrades Sâmia and Glauber. The murder […] will be investigated as the Minister of Justice has already determined. Great sadness”, said Gleisi Hoffmann, national president of the PT.

Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ), who is also from Rio, expressed solidarity with the families of the doctors “cowardly murdered” in the city, and asked that the crime “be quickly clarified and the criminals found and held accountable”.

“Full solidarity with congresswoman Sâmia Bomfim for the brutal crime of execution that took the lives of her brother Diego and two other companions this morning, all doctors who were participating in a Congress in Rio. My condolences to all the family members. We have to go deep and fast in this investigation”, said Jandira Feghali (PCdoB-RJ), deputy from Rio, on social media.

Senator Sergio Moro (Podemos-PR) classified the death of the doctors as a “brutal and unacceptable crime”, while deputy Gustavo Gayer (PL-GO) called the crime an “attack”.

“There is no room for differences in these moments”, he pointed out.

Federal deputy Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG) also left the difference aside and stated that this “is not a time for debate, but for acceptance. Only those who lose a loved one know what this pain is.”

Kim Kataguiri (União Brasil-SP), federal deputy for São Paulo, also paid his respects to the families of the victims and classified the murders as a “regrettable crime”.

Senator Marcos Rogério (PL-RO), says he received “with deep regret” the news of the death of Sâmia’s brother, “victims of a criminal act”.

Ministers sympathize with death of doctor

Among the ministers of the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), Fernando Haddad, from Finance, provided support and condolences to Sâmia and Glauber and asked for “support so that those responsible can be identified”.

Minister Anielle Franco, of Racial Equality, states that she received the news of the deaths of the three doctors “with sadness”.

“The brutal crime must be rigorously investigated and those responsible identified and punished. Perseu, Diego and Marcos were recognized professionals from the Institute of Orthopedics and Traumatology at Hospital de Clínicas USP”, said Nísia Trindade, from Saúde.

Marina Silva, from Meio Environment, classified the deaths as “terrible acts of violence that destroyed the lives of their loved ones. The barbarity of violence redoubles the pain of loss.”

Board of Directors of the Chamber also speaks out

In a statement, the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Deputies stated that it “repudiates any and all violence such as that practiced in the early hours of today against four people, one of whom is the brother of federal deputy Sâmia Bomfim” and expresses solidarity with the victims’ family and friends.
