Retrospective: 2023, year of consolidation for women’s football

The seventh edition of the Women’s Football World Cup, played in Australia and New Zealand, made clear the consolidation and development of the sport in many countries. The main reflection of this was Spain winning the unprecedented title. The four-time champions from the United States, eliminated in the round of 16, were left out of the top three for the first time in history.
Although the Spanish team has existed since 1980, this was the country’s third participation in the World Cup (it only qualified in 2015 and 2019). It was in the French Cup that the Spanish went beyond the round of 16. The turnaround for women’s football in Spain began in 2010, with investment in the base and structure of the sport. Jorge Vilda, the champion coach, started working with the main team in 2015, having previously played for La Roja’s youth teams. Champion yes, but not unanimous among the players. In 2022, 15 athletes, including award-winners Alexia Putellas and Aitana Bonmatí, asked Vilda to resign in a letter. Moral harassment and complaints about working methods would have motivated the players’ movement. He remained in office, but the division in the locker room continued.

By winning the 2023 World Cup, Spain demonstrated, in addition to technique and talent, how much progress there is still needed off the field. The non-consensual kiss on the lips of the then president of the Spanish Football Federation, Luís Rubiales, on striker Jenni Hermoso triggered yet another movement among players and society, as it generated public debate and positions from authorities.
Rubiales tried to stay in office, but he couldn’t handle the pressure and resigned from his position. The manager was banned from football for three years following a decision by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee. A supporter of Rubiales, Jorge Vilda was fired from the Spanish national team and now heads the Moroccan women’s team.

Midfielder Aitana Bonmatí confirmed her brilliance on the field by being awarded the best of the World Cup and later winning the Ballon d’Or. Also from Spain, Salma Paralluelo was considered the best young player. The 2023 World Cup also showed the world the talents of England’s Mary Earps, awarded best goalkeeper, and Japan’s Hinata Miyazawa, top scorer in the competition. From South America, 18-year-old Colombian Linda Caicedo gained the spotlight for the most beautiful goal of the World Cup against Germany. In fact, Caicedo, Bonmatí and Jenni Hermoso are the finalists for FIFA The Best of 2023, which will be revealed on January 15th.
Brazilian Team
Brazil performed well below expectations at the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. Under the command of Swedish coach Pia Sundhage, the team was eliminated in the group stage after being defeated by a surprising Jamaica. In the nine editions of the Women’s Football World Cup, Brazil had only had such poor participation in the 1991 and 1995 tournaments.
Sundhage, who had been hired to lead the team until the Paris Games, was fired and had her job questioned, although she played an important role in encouraging the development of Brazil’s youth teams.

Since September, multi-champion Corinthians coach Arthur Elias has been in charge of the women’s team. Of Brazil’s five friendlies played under Elias’ signature, Brazil won three (4-0 over Nicaragua, 4-3 over Japan and 1-0 over Canada). Furthermore, the Canarian team lost 2-0 to Japan and 2-0 to Canada.
In Brazil, women’s football in 2023 was dominated by Corinthians. Brabas do Timão were champions of the Copa do Brasil, Campeonato Brasileiro, Libertadores and Paulistão. With the departure of Arthur Elias, the Corinthians have a new coach, Lucas Piccinato, who left Internacional with the Gauchão title and after completing an outstanding campaign in the Libertadores.
The base comes strong
The 2023 calendar for Brazilian women’s football closed with the first edition of the Women’s Cup. Held in São Paulo by the São Paulo Football Federation (FPF), the tournament featured 16 under-20 teams from different states. Flamengo made history by being the champion of the first edition. The title came from the classic against Botafogo at the Canindé stadium.

For 2024, the São Paulo Federation plans to expand the tournament. “We currently have eight states, but the objective for next year is to increase the number of teams, but mainly to increase the number of states. We want the whole of Brazil to participate. Because this will be a competition to promote women’s football”, said the FPF’s director of women’s football, Ana Lorena Marche.
