Respiratory outbreak in China is not caused by new virus – 11/23/2023 – Health

Chinese health authorities stated this Thursday (23) that no new or unknown pathogens were detected in the outbreak of respiratory diseases affecting the country.

The statement was made in a conference call between the WHO (World Health Organization) and members of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention and Beijing Children’s Hospital. The meeting was held after the health organization requested clinical and epidemiological data on circulating pathogens.

Chinese authorities have attributed the increase in hospitalizations to the relaxation of Covid-19 restrictions and the arrival of the cold season, as well as the circulation of known pathogens such as influenza, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) — which affects more children than adults — and coronavirus.

According to the WHO, there is not enough information to accurately determine the general risk of these cases of respiratory diseases detected in the country. Due to the arrival of winter, an increasing trend in respiratory diseases is expected.

Based on available information, the WHO recommends that people in China follow measures to reduce the risk of respiratory illnesses, which include taking recommended vaccines against influenza, Covid and other respiratory pathogens; keep distance from sick people; take tests and seek medical attention if necessary; wear protective masks; ensure good ventilation and wash your hands regularly.

No specific measures are recommended for anyone planning to go to China. According to the organization, in general, people should avoid traveling while they have symptoms suggestive of respiratory illnesses.
