In 2024, the Ministry of Education (MEC) program will offer 112,168 places.

Registration for students to participate in the Student Financing Fund (Fies) begins this Tuesday (12/3). Registration can be done until Friday (15/3), through the Single Portal for Access to Higher Education. The pre-selection results will be announced on March 21st. In 2024, the Ministry of Education (MEC) program will offer 112,168 places.

According to the new Fies Social rule, students with a per capita family income of up to half the minimum wage registered in the Single Registry (CadÚnico) are entitled to reserve 50% of the places in each edition through Fies Social. For these students, financing of up to 100% of educational fees will be allowed, as detailed in Notice No. 10/2024, published by the Ministry of Education (MEC) on Thursday (7/3).

Another change highlighted in the notice refers to the candidates’ choice of courses. When signing up for Fies, students can choose up to three course options. Previously, it was required that the chosen courses belong to the same group of areas, which prevented registration from being made for a specific course in different institutions and/or locations, for example. Now, the candidate will be able to choose three course options from different groups of knowledge areas.

To define the groupings of courses, the MEC carried out a review of the areas of knowledge considered priorities by Fies and included courses with greater employability and higher average salaries, in addition to degree and pedagogy courses, aimed at working in basic education. Thus, it adopted as criteria the Standardized International Classification of Education Adapted for Undergraduate Courses and Sequential Specific Training (Cine Brasil), used by the National Institute of Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira (Inep) and aligned with the United Nations (UN). ).

Furthermore, the MEC created a rule to better distribute the places offered among courses with positive evaluation in the National Higher Education Assessment System (Sinaes), published by the National Institute of Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira (Inep). As a result, places will be distributed from the highest course concept to the lowest, which will avoid offering courses that have not yet been evaluated.

Fies Social – From 2024, with Fies Social, established by Resolution No. 58/2024, the MEC aims to resume the social role of student financing, as it is intended to meet the needs of low-income students. In this way, it plays a transformative role in society, by offering better conditions for obtaining financing under Fies.

Fies – Fies, established by Law No. 10,260, in 2001, offers places to finance undergraduate courses in non-free institutions with a positive evaluation at Sinaes.
