Charlie Hunnam, Sofia Boutella, Djimon Hounsou, Michiel Huisman, Ray Fisher, Ed Skrein, E. Duffy and Staz Nair spoke with g1 about Zack Snyder’s new film. WATCH. Cast of ‘Rebel Moon’ talks about fun filming “Rebel Moon – Part 1: The Fire Girl” premiered this Friday (22) as director Zack Snyder’s major original project, a space science fiction with big ambitions and a even bigger cast. The film was born as a childhood dream of the filmmaker, loved and equally hated for his version of “Justice League” (2021) – and the beginning of the integrated DC universe in cinemas – to be part of “Star Wars”. The idea didn’t go ahead, at one point it became a series, but it finally came to life on Netflix full of names that many may know more as “that actor from that movie”. g1 spoke with the big star, Sofia Boutella (“Kingsman: The Secret Service”) and Charlie Hunnam (“Sons of Anarchy”), Ed Skrein and Michiel Huisman (who played the same role in “Game of Thrones”, Daario Naharis) , Djimon Hounsou (“Guardians of the Galaxy”), Ray Fisher (“Justice League”), Staz Nair (“Supergirl”) and E. Duffy (who makes his feature film debut). Watch the video above. Below, read highlights about the fun during recording, working with Snyder, meeting the director (in the case of Fisher), the relevance of the story and the experience at CCXP 2023: Charlie Hunnam, Michiel Huisman, Sofia Boutella, Staz Nair and Djimon Hounsou in scene from ‘Rebel Moon – Part 1: The fire girl’ Disclosure STORY STILL RELEVANT Djimon Hounsou: This story written by Zack is still relevant for the simple reason that it imitates our lives so much. The state we are in today. Certainly for me personally, it resonates with the geopolitical tentacles that have held the continent of Africa for centuries and centuries. That’s what I was referring to. And the other message is the need to take care of our planet. Staz Nair: I think good fiction is always inspired by truth and human experience. This is what allows the viewer and fan to connect. Charlie Hunnam: For me, the biggest question I was interested in exploring is this is great entertainment. This is how entertainment should be. 90% of this film is mythology building, great characters, entertainment and taking the audience to places they’ve never been before. And then connected to that 10% is this incredibly serious message that we must all come together and try to be better for our planet so that we have the potential to move forward. The thing is, what we sometimes forget, when we talk about conserving the planet, is that the planet will ultimately be fine. What we are conserving is our ability to live on Earth. And all our brothers and sisters of every other species. It’s a lot about self-preservation and trying to preserve this beautiful thing that is humanity. Trying to stop self-sabotage and making life increasingly difficult for ourselves. FUN ON RECORDING Sofia Boutella: Personally, I just had so much fun every day recording. It’s wonderful to work with Zack, because he is so prepared. What he does is at such a high level, that every day I was learning and watching him execute something with such precision. This is really fun for me. Get to know everyone. Being able to interact with everyone. We all have such a beautiful plot to defend and a story that is also very complex, but very fun. All the action we did, the training we went through. All of it. I remember arriving for recording, every first day of a new scene that we haven’t started yet, preparing for something we haven’t done yet, and being completely terrified. Ever. And he was relaxed. It’s also a reminder that I can have fun too. Sometimes you don’t know if you’ll be able to deliver, but he gives you that balance. Because he is so consistent. Consistently excited about what we are doing. There’s such a good balance between seriousness and fun. Sometimes I’m too serious. Zack Snyder, Michiel Huisman and Sofia Boutella during the recording of ‘Rebel Moon’ Clay Enos/Netflix Ed Skrein: Zack is a man of clarity, of information. Any information you ask about the character, he has the answer right away, but at the same time, he is joking and relaxing. Throwing American footballs, playing. Sometimes I sat there thinking, “Guys, we have to do this.” And Zack is there messing around. And I think, “Wait a minute. That’s why his recordings are so brilliant. Because they’re so demanding, so challenging, the characters are so well written, so difficult to play, but that’s the duality that Zack brings. .Hounsou: The most fun thing for me was the brotherhood that we developed between all the stars that came. It kind of made everyone put their egos aside and kind of focused on the story we were telling. Staz: The camaraderie was a wonderful thing to experience. Meeting with these amazing people but also industry heavyweights and finding a feeling of equality. I also have a lot more energy than everyone. And it’s really fun to try to encourage these guys first thing in the morning. Or later in the day. Michiel Huisman : I think any scene with all of us together was always fun. Because there was this chemistry between us. So it kind of turned into this school trip. Sometimes someone would have to remind us that we were actually going to film a scene. “Ah, okay.” Charlie: You know, it’s funny. There are things that initially started to drive me crazy about the pacing of this film, but in the end it was actually some of the best days of shooting. So we were in that scene, but not doing much. And by “not doing much” I mean absolutely nothing. We’re just standing at the bottom. This scene took 16 days to record. So, for 16 days, we just stood there. And there was this moment where, sometimes they use composite footage in the background, we were literally just standing there with nothing on, pretending to watch this fight. And they continued recording. There weren’t, like, green balls flying replicating movement. They were filming composition, filming composition. And we just stood there. And no one said “cut”. (Imitating someone frozen) “Did anyone talk? What’s going on? Are you still acting?” (laughs) E. Duffy: There was a day of recording in a beautiful sunset. We were outside. There was no cell phone signal. We were recording in the heat all day. By the end of the day, we were hallucinating and just laughing together. It was a beautiful testament to how great the filming was. Michiel Huisman and Ed Skrein in a scene from ‘Rebel Moon – Part 1: The Fire Girl’ Clay Enos/Netflix WORKING WITH ZACK AGAIN Ray: It’s great. With everything that happened with the other things, we got a huge victory in the end. I think for the fans and for those who love Zack’s work. And this will be an even bigger victory, because here we have an unrestricted new brand that will explore the full creative depth of Zack Snyder’s mind. He, Kurt (Johnstad) and Shay (Hatten, the writers) did a phenomenal job on the story and script. For me, I say, “Look, I want to be in all of Zack Snyder’s movies. In any role. I just sneak in anyway. I can be like the janitor in the background sweeping. You can give me someone who’s just walking. I can be a zombie that has a walk and a grunt in the ‘Armyverse’.” I can speak for myself, but I think it’s the experience of a lot of people from working with him, he’s the kind of director that you don’t mind waking up to at 3am because you know he’s going to do some cool stuff. BRASIL AND CCXP Duffy: It was my first time here. People are amazing. The food is incredible. And the whole energy of the convention was so uplifting. It really brings more life to what we’re doing in “Rebel Moon.” Fisher: It was also my first time in Brazil. As someone who has been to many comic book conventions, this one has to be the biggest for me in terms of love and energy. I know that for us, because we came straight from a strike, being able to go out and interact with the fans is really exciting. Michiel: It was my first time in São Paulo, but I traveled through Brazil a while ago this year with my family and it was wonderful. One of the best trips we’ve ever taken.
