According to data from the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (Pnad), released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) this Friday (22), the number of children and adolescents, aged 6 to 14, enrolled in elementary education (from 1st to 9th grade) was below the target for the first time in Brazil.

According to the survey, in 2023, the rate of enrollment in primary education was 94.6%, which represents a drop of 0.6% compared to the year 2022. The schooling rate of this age group, which measures only school attendance, without considering the level of education, remained at 99.4%.

The target of the National Education Plan (PNE) for children and adolescents enrolled in primary education is 95%. The 2023 result represents the lowest level ever recorded by the indicator since the beginning of the series, in 2016.

“By Major Regions, the panorama was similar to the national one: an adjusted rate of net school attendance below Target 2 (of the PNE), showing a drop in the South and Southeast Regions between 2022 and 2023, while in the other Regions there was stability. In 2023, the Southeast and North Regions had the highest rates, 94.9% and 94.8%, respectively. The Central-West and South Regions, both with 94.2%, had the lowest rates”, says an excerpt from the research.

Furthermore, according to the research, the schooling rate of teenagers aged 15 to 17, in 2023, was 91.9% and 75% of young people aged 15 to 17 attended or had completed secondary school.

The same survey revealed that in 2023 there were 9.3 million people aged 15 or over who were illiterate and an illiteracy rate of 5.4%, which represents a decline of 0.2% compared to the year 2022.
