With the vacancy opened by the departure of deputy minister Maria Claudia Bucchianeri from the TSE (Superior Electoral Court), some names began to circulate as possible members of the triple list that the STF (Federal Supreme Court) will forward to President Lula (PT), who will have the final say.
Among the most cited, two women appear with more strength. Lawyer Gabriela Araújo, coordinator of the Prerogativas group, is a friend of First Lady Rosângela da Silva, Janja. She is married to the state deputy of the PT from São Paulo Emídio de Sousa and recently acted as a commentator for CNN Brasil.
Marilda Silveira, close to Minister Flávio Dino (Justice and Public Security), composed the last triple list for substitute minister. Lula ended up choosing Edilene Lôbo, the first black woman to hold the position.
Silveira and Prerogativas have had friction in the past. In April, the legal group torpedoed her appointment as Dino’s advisor, because in Operation Lava Jato, she acted against the current president in some actions. In 2016, the lawyer signed a writ of mandamus against Lula’s inauguration as head of the Civil House of Dilma Rousseff.
Also listed is lawyer Renato Ribeiro de Almeida, close to Silvio Almeida (Human Rights) and director of the Luiz Gama Institute, founded by the minister. Specialist in electoral law, being academic coordinator of Abredep (Brazilian Academy of Electoral and Political Law).
More recently, the name of lawyer Flávio Caetano, who worked in the finance minister Fernando Haddad’s mayoral campaign and in the re-election campaign of former president Dilma Rousseff, began to be mentioned.
Bucchianeri was not reappointed for another term as a substitute minister for the TSE. Interlocutors attribute this to friction with the president of the court, Alexandre de Moraes.
