PT will articulate “symbolic return” of Dilma’s presidential term

This weekend, President Lula and federal deputy Gleisi Hoffmann (PT-PR) made statements announcing that the Workers’ Party will articulate in Congress the “symbolic return” of Dilma Rousseff’s mandate.

This move by the PT comes in the wake of a decision by the Federal Regional Court of the 1st Region (TRF-1), which on the last 21st maintained the filing of an impropriety action against Dilma for the tax pedaling case. The accusations based the process of impeachment of the former president, removed in 2016 and currently at the head of the Brics bank.

“I understand that a draft resolution in this sense is in order based on the TRF-1 decision, which makes it clear that the impeachment was a great farce, that the pedaling story was a set-up, literally a coup. Dilma and the history of Brazil deserve it”, said Gleisi, national president of the PT, to the newspaper Folha de S. Pauloin an interview published this Sunday (27).

Before that, on Saturday (26), President Lula had already signaled that the PT intends to initiate this mobilization in favor of Dilma. “Now I’m going to discuss how we’re going to do it, it’s not possible to repair political rights if she wants to be president again, because I want to end my term. But you need to know how to repair something that was judged for something that didn’t happen “, he said, during a press conference held in Luanda, where he participated in the Brazil-Angola Economic Forum.

In December 2013, the National Congress also symbolically returned the mandate of former President João Goulart (1919-1976), removed from office in 1964. The project, authored by Senators Pedro Simon (MDB-RS) and Randolfe Rodrigues (non-AP party), annulled the House session on April 2 of that year, which declared the Presidency of the Republic vacant and paved the way for the military regime.

Dilma Rousseff, then president of the country, participated in the solemn session, which also had the presence of several PT ministers of the time, such as Aloizio Mercadante (Education), Maria do Rosário (Human Rights), Ideli Salvatti (Institutional Relations), Celso Amorim (Defence) and Marta Suplicy (Culture). The event included an apology from the President of Congress, Senator Renan Calheiros (MDB-AL), the showing of a video in homage to Goulart and a performance by singer Fafá de Belém, who performed the National Anthem.

At the end of the session, a replica of the President of the Republic’s diploma was delivered to Jango’s son, João Vicente Goulart – who throughout the ceremony sat at the plenary table, where Dilma was also present. “The symbolic devolution of the mandate reveals the strength of our democracy and the Brazilian State’s commitment to truth and memory,” said the former president ten years ago.
