The PT wants to block the implementation of SebraeCred, a bank belonging to Sebrae (Brazilian Support Service for Micro and Small Companies) aimed at serving small companies that face difficulties in obtaining credit in the market. Created at the end of last year, SebraeCred is defined as a function deviation by Paulo Okamotto, who deals with the subject by the government.
According to the petista, who was president of Sebrae from 2003 to 2010, the institution’s mission should be to provide training and technical assistance, and not offer credit and earn interest.
“Sebrae decided to take the money that should be taken to small businesses that need knowledge and created a direct credit guarantee society, which lends money at interest. Instead of taking care of the main business, which is to bring knowledge, information and assistance to entrepreneurs and discuss business environments, credits and innovation with the government, do you decide to set up a bank to compete with other entities with the aim of making a profit?”, he says.
“Sebrae doesn’t have to aim to make money with this kind of thing. And that puts the system at risk. If people don’t pay, how do they do it? The person takes the money, doesn’t have the knowledge to use it, the company goes bankrupt. Sebrae it even has no morals to charge”, he completes.
In October last year, the Central Bank authorized the creation of SebraeCred, a direct credit company with a proposal to act as a fintech and initial credit of R$ 600 million. Carlos Melles, president of Sebrae, said at the time that the idea would not be to lend money, but to act only as a credit guarantor.
Sebrae’s deliberative council meets on Wednesday (8). The government tries to overthrow Melles, the current president who is seen as a Bolsonarist, and put names more identified with the federal management, such as the former candidate for the government of Santa Catarina Décio Lima (PT).
