Ciro Nogueira defends unity to beat Boulos in SP – 05/03/2023 – Panel

Ciro Nogueira, former minister of Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and national president of the PP, decided to take the field to help Ricardo Nunes (MDB), mayor of São Paulo, in his quest for re-election in 2024, when he should face federal deputy Guilherme Boulos (PSOL).

Nogueira’s excited participation in a dinner promoted by the mayor with national political leaders last week stood out to several of those present, according to whom the senator from Piauí was very willing to engage in the emedebist’s continuity project.

Nogueira tells the Panel that the reason for his emphatic manifestation of support for Nunes comes from the perception that the 2024 election for the command of the municipality will be the most important in the country in the coming years due to the actors who will be involved in the dispute.

For the former minister, Boulos’ victory would be “a disaster for the country”, as it could give the Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) government an understanding that it has popular support to become radicalized.

“It will give an endorsement of radicalism, which is a great characteristic of Boulos. It would be a very great tragedy”, says Nogueira.

For the senator, Lula has been flirting with what he calls radicalism, but lacks the courage to assume the position, given the perception that most of the population would oppose it.

“If you get the backing of an election in the main city, that could make you go to radicalism, which would be bad for the country”, he says, adding that there is no point where he and Boulos have any similarity and that, in his view, everything the psolist stands for is unbelievable and goes against law, order, production and work.

Nogueira defines Bolsonaro’s defeat by Lula in 2022 as an election that was won and lost due to their own mistakes. Therefore, he talks about not repeating the same failures in 2024, with the next presidential race already on the horizon.

“We have the opportunity to unify the entire political field that I really wanted to see united in 2022, which is Gilberto Kassab (PSD), Podemos, Valdemar [Costa Neto, presidente do PL]Marcos Pereira [presidente do Republicanos], MDB, which corresponds to 70% of the country’s political strength. It is a great opportunity to unify these actors, which, if it works, is an embryo to work in 2026”, he analyzes.

“It is an embryo, a very good seed. This union would be a very important political force. If Bolsonaro had had this support, he would have easily won the last election”, he adds.

Nogueira says he will take his assessment to Bolsonaro that it would be important to support a candidate with Nunes’ profile in São Paulo: centered, balanced, similar to Governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans). With that, in his view, Boulos’ chances would diminish.

“I think Bolsonaro showed great electoral strength in the state of São Paulo with the election of Tarcísio. But both Tarcísio and Bolsonaro lost in the capital. So a candidate from Bolsonarism would have a very high chance of losing the election against a candidate from the left. candidate from the center with the support of Bolsonarism is a total favorite”, says the former minister.

Federal deputies Ricardo Salles (PL-SP) and Tabata Amaral (PSB-SP) have also been moving to participate in the São Paulo City Hall election in 2024.
