The PT councilors bench in the Legislative Assembly of São Paulo will present a project with the objective of revoking the law enacted by the Tarcísio de Freitas government (Republicans) that honors Colonel Erasmo Dias, exponent of the military dictatorship.

In addition, the parliamentarians also sent a representation to the Public Ministry of São Paulo asking for the declaration of unconstitutionality of the law.

Enacted on Wednesday (28), the law establishes that a road junction located in the hometown of the honoree, Paraguaçu Paulista, will be named “Deputy Erasmo Dias”.

Dias was a federal deputy between 1979 and 1983 and a state deputy between 1987 and 1999. He died in 2010 at the age of 85. Secretary of Public Security of São Paulo from 1974 to 1979, he became known for commanding the invasion of PUC in São Paulo in September 1977, in the last major operation of the military regime (1964-1985) against the student movement. On the occasion, students performed a public act for the reorganization of the UNE (National Union of Students).

The action resulted in the arrest of 854 people, taken to the Tobias de Aguiar Battalion. Of these, 92 were registered with Deops (State Department of Political and Social Order of São Paulo) and 42 ended up prosecuted based on the National Security Law, accused of subversion.

In an interview with Sheet in 2005, Dias said he considered torture to be justifiable in certain contexts and defended the dictatorship’s official version that journalist Vladimir Herzog, murdered by the military on the premises of DOI-Codi, committed suicide.

According to his biographical file on the São Paulo Secretariat for Public Security page, “he was one of the founders of the situationist political party Arena at the time of bipartisanship and organized the first actions to hunt communists after 1968.”

“The state of São Paulo cannot honor a representative of the dictatorship, a violator of human rights and democracy. The device should be named after someone more worthy and respected by society”, says deputy Paulo Fiorilo, leader of the PT in Alesp .

“The soldier who is intended to be honored dedicated a large part of his career to implanting, consolidating and defending the dictatorship implemented on April 1, 1964, cannot deserve any tribute given that his biography is marked by the mistreatment of fundamental principles of the constitutional order “, says the text of the bill asking for the annulment of the tribute.

The Tarcísio administration’s initiative triggered negative reactions. The Arns Human Rights Commission sent a letter to the governor requesting the annulment of the homage. The rector of PUC-SP, Maria Amália Pie Abib Andery, professors and students of the university signed a note in repudiation of the law.

Federal deputy Luiza Erundina (PSOL-SP) classified as appalling and nauseating the news that “a defender of torture and institutional violence is honored by the government of São Paulo”.

“Erasmo Dias is one of the symbols of the dictatorship and makes it even more evident that Governor Tarcísio, by not vetoing the proposal, reinforces his role as a representative of the Bolsonarist extreme right. to democracy. Let us remain vigilant and the commitment that we must never allow history to repeat itself”, wrote the parliamentarian.

State deputy Eduardo Suplicy (PT-SP) said that the enactment of the law is regrettable and recalled Erasmo Dias’ performance in the invasion of PUC, “in addition to carrying out other actions of police violence and persecution of people who fought against the undemocratic military regime .”

In a note, the state management states that the bill “was analyzed from a technical and legal point of view under the terms of Law No. 14,707, of March 8, 2012.”
