A quick circle around the government and opposition groups is enough to realize the following: the right is fully committed to expanding spaces in the 2024 election, while the left remains somewhat unappetizing in winning mayors and councilors.

The president of the PP, senator Ciro Nogueira, has been launching a challenge. He bets that parties in the right-wing area of ​​influence will clean up the PT. Back in February, I listened to such a prognosis with distrust. I interpreted it as desire, mere bravado.

Until recently, I heard from a more senior PT member the assessment that the party now in the Presidency of the Republic is somewhat indifferent, not to say disorganized, in relation to next year’s race.

Today, PT counts on disputing only three capitals: Aracaju, Vitória and Fortaleza. In the others, it goes by composition with allied subtitles. The most striking example is that of São Paulo.

In the capital of the largest electoral college in the country, President Luiz Inácio da Silva will not give in to pressure to break the agreement with Guilherme Boulos (PSOL) in favor of his own candidacy. He will be more than a guarantor of the alliance. To the extent appropriate for the position, he will be present in the campaign.

In Rio, Belo Horizonte and other large cities, the option is for the policy of alliances. Why? The federal government does not see the 2024 dispute as a bloodshed because it does not see a direct relationship with Lula’s re-election in 2026.

In the palace inmates there is no doubt about the candidacy. On the right, the same impression is taken. If the government and the president are in good conditions, nobody can take away from Lula the renewal of his mandate.

Hence the interest of conservatives in municipalities. At a disadvantage in the presidential, it is better to bet on mayors and councilors, as they influence the increase in the number of federal deputies and the volume of money in party and electoral funds. Pragmatism in vein.
