PT members talk about building their own base, but without breaking with Lira – 06/02/2023 – Panel

After successive defeats in votes in the Chamber of Deputies, PT parliamentarians have debated the need to build their own support base, in an attempt to depend less on the articulation capacity of Arthur Lira (PP-AL), president of the House.
One of the ideas discussed is trying to attract parliamentarians from acronyms such as União Brasil, PP, PL and Republicans, thus moving away from the President of the House and forming a more reliable basis for voting.
Petistas say that Lira encouraged the Lula administration (PT) to adopt this strategy by saying, after the vote on the Provisional Measure of the Ministries, that the government would have to “walk with its own legs”.
A wing of the PT says that the failures show that the strategy of outsourcing the government’s political articulation to Lira did not work. For this reason, they claim, it would be important to form a group of its own or even a governing bloc.
There are internal resistances, however. “That would be the burial of the government”, says Carlos Zarattini (PT-SP), about the idea of setting up a block. For the deputy, the correct strategy would be to listen to the deputies that currently make up the allied parties, identify the problems and solve them. “He has to talk to each of them and take care of the base.”
Parliamentarians point to the need for care so that the search for more autonomy in relation to Lira does not turn the mayor into an opponent, recalling the trauma of the rupture between Dilma Rousseff (PT) and Eduardo Cunha in 2015 that paved the way for the impeachment of the president the following year.
Lira is also cornered after the Federal Police operation that targeted an ally of his, this Thursday (1). According to allies, his irritation could lead him to a rupture with the Executive.
