The PT’s national directory, the highest instance of the party, will incorporate the defense of zero tariff, free public transport, as a flag of the acronym. The decision was approved on Sunday (9), following a proposal by the PT’s communication secretary, Jilmar Tatto.
Also called a free pass, this public policy provides for the use of public transport without charging the end user a fee. In this model, the system is financed through the municipal budget.
According to a survey by NTU (National Association of Urban Transport Companies), released in April 2023, 74 cities adopt zero tariff in the country. Of this total, 67 implemented it throughout their transport system, every day of the week. In three cities, the free pass occurs only on specific days of the week, and in four, it partially encompasses the system during all days of the week.
They are small and medium-sized cities, with populations ranging from 3,000 to more than 300,000 inhabitants.
“80% of people live in cities. Candidates who don’t talk about sanitation, housing and mobility are doomed to failure. If we don’t take ownership and defend zero tariffs and investment in electric buses, subways, trains, the right can take ownership. So much so that we have several right-wing mayors who are also discussing that they want to implement zero tariffs in their cities”, says Tatto, one of the PT’s specialists in urban public transport.
“The PT woke up and put this as a very important flag for us to defend in municipal elections and in Brazil. As was the defense of SUS and integral education in the past”, he concludes.
