PT did not bet on the relationship with social movements, says CMP – 08/30/2023 – Panel

President of the CMP (Central de Movimentos Populares), Raimundo Bonfim says that, like President Lula (PT), the leaders of social movements also identify a numbness in the mobilization in 2023.

As the column showed, the petista lamented to allies that apathy hinders the discussion of progressive agendas and leaves the government more fragile in the face of pressure and resistance from the center and the right.

Bonfim points out, on the other hand, that this “down period” demands a more structural and self-critical reading of the PT regarding its historical relationship with social movements.

“Throughout Lula’s and Dilma’s previous terms, the PT chose to bet on institutional policy, by building a relationship with Congress, and paid less attention to social movements. So this downturn also has to do with this relationship farther away,” he says.

The CMP leader also says that this is still the beginning of the government, “a phase of accommodation”, and that the movements have spent a lot of energy in recent years.

On Thursday (31), the relationship with the federal government will be one of the themes of the meeting of social movement leaders to be held in Brasília. Representatives of CUT, MST, MTST, UNE, union centrals, among others, will also discuss the national situation, joint agendas of the movements and the relationship with Congress.
