PSOL wing says alignment with Lula is not automatic – 07/18/2023 – Panel

The dominant wing in the PSOL, which includes some of its main political leaders, states in a text prepared for the party’s next congress that President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) has opted for “governance at any cost”.
The text, with the title “For a Popular PSOL”, also preaches that the party has an attitude of “active solidarity” with the current government, but without automatic alignment.
“The PSOL must continue occupying the space of the left wing of the base of the Lula government, of political force to be heard in the negotiations of merit of the Executive’s projects, without ceasing to express dissent whenever this is imposed”, says the text, signed, among others, by the president of the party, Juliano Medeiros, by the minister of Indigenous Peoples, Sônia Guajajara, and by the leader of the bench in the Chamber, Guilherme Boulos (SP).
A recent example of this dissent occurred in the vote on the fiscal framework, when the party took a position against the matter, one of the priorities of Lula’s legislative agenda. For this reason, he ended up being criticized by other government parties, such as the PT.
According to the Psolistas’ document, the framework and influence of the centrão limit Lula’s possibilities for a truly left-wing government.
“Lula repeats characteristics of his previous governments, governing within the limits of the given correlation of forces and possible parliamentary agreements”, says the document.
The text should be debated at the caption congress scheduled for September, when the national leadership will be renewed. The tendency is for the wing composed of Medeiros, Boulos and Guajajara to continue commanding the party.
