PSOL asks Brazil to welcome Nicaraguan opponents – 03/03/2023 – Panel

The PSOL approved a motion asking the Brazilian government to welcome Nicaraguan opponents expelled from the country last month by the regime of dictator Daniel Ortega. The dissidents were imprisoned and had their citizenship withdrawn by the government of the Central American country.

“The PSOL repudiates the withdrawal of civil rights that led to the Nicaraguan opposition’s exile, values ​​the position of the governments of Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Mexico for declaring shelter in their countries and hopes that Brazil will also receive and welcome those who have lost their nationality Nicaraguan for political persecution”, says the note, approved by the National Executive of PSOL last Tuesday (28).

The psolist stance towards the Nicaraguan dictatorship is one of the rare points on which it manifests clear divergence with the PT in the international arena. The PT members have a historical connection with the Ortega regime and oscillate between support for Nicaragua and silence regarding the country’s human rights violations.

“We don’t want to be dictatorship inspectors, nor give certificates of democracy. It’s the US who does that. Our issue is the defense of human rights. Everyone should be supportive of this”, says PSOL president Juliano Medeiros.

He declined to comment on the PT’s position on the issue. The PSOL mirrors the position adopted by the left-wing governments of Chile and Colombia, which have increasingly criticized the Nicaraguan regime’s authoritarianism.
