Mark of the first terms of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), Bolsa Família was relaunched by the president this Thursday (2).
The new version of the program should raise the average amount to be received by registered families to around R$715. Today, the average benefit of Auxílio Brasil is R$ 606 – the name of the program had been changed during the Bolsonaro administration at the end of 2021.
According to the government, the new Bolsa Família should serve 20.8 million homes this year. In addition to the minimum payment of BRL 600, the program will have an additional BRL 150 for each child from 0 to 6 years old and another BRL 50 for each person between 7 and 18 years old.
This Friday’s (3rd) episode of Café da Manhã explains the changes in Bolsa Família and analyzes its merits and possible distortions. Reporter Fernando Canzian also talks about the importance of income transfer programs to combat inequality and discusses whether one day they will no longer be needed in the country.
