Governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans) announced this Monday afternoon (10) the creation of Provão Paulista, a new selection model for admission to state universities in São Paulo.

As shown by Sheetthe new model, which will take the form of a serial entrance exam, was proposed and developed by the rectors of USP, Unicamp and Unesp.

The exam will be applied to students during the 1st, 2nd and 3rd years of high school in public schools starting this year. The grades obtained in these tests will be used to compete for undergraduate vacancies at universities.

According to the state government, around 13,000 vacancies will already be offered this year — only around 3,000 will be at USP, Unesp and Unicamp; the remainder will be made available by Univesp (virtual university) and by the Paula Souza Center for technical education.

“Young people dream of going to university, because this is an important step towards entering the job market, towards professional success and financial autonomy. We want to make this dream possible”, said the governor.

With the serial entrance exam, the deans hope that students from the state network will feel more motivated to at least try to enter higher education. In 2022, less than 18% of graduates from public schools in São Paulo signed up to take the entrance exams at these universities.

The governor promised that students with a family income of up to 1.5 minimum wages who get a place at universities through the Provão Paulista will be entitled to a scholarship during graduation. The value was not informed.
