Prosecutors ask for investigation of head of MP for Minas – 05/19/2023 – Panel

A group of nine prosecutors filed a representation with the Internal Affairs of the MPMG (Minas Gerais Public Ministry) to investigate the conduct of the state attorney general, Jarbas Soares Júnior.
According to Piauí magazine, Jarbas hitchhiked on two occasions in the jet of businessman Lucas Prado Kallas, arrested in 2008 during Operation João de Barro, by the PF (Federal Police). He is still facing charges in freedom.
Furthermore, one of the companies that Kallas owns, Cedro, would have signed an agreement with the MPMG to shelve investigations into environmental crimes upon payment of compensation of R$ 2 million.
The signatories of the representation claim that they are not questioning the “public and well-known” friendship between the two, but rather the evidence that hitchhiking does not comply with “ethical and moral principles and not even with legal and regulatory provisions”.
“What is certain is that, due to the size of the position he occupies, the Attorney General cannot receive docile perks from any person, becoming even more serious when the pampering comes from a businessman who has a record precisely for drug trafficking influence. This fact cannot be normalized internally by the members of the Public Ministry because it materializes a clear and imminent discredit to anyone who is indifferent to it. After all, the Public Ministry is the main inspector of the proper functioning of democratic institutions and, therefore, must to be the first to commit to the ethical and moral rigors required of those who qualify to enter the public service”, they justify.
In the piece, the members of the MP ask for the establishment of the investigation procedure, clarification on the trips made and the details of the agreements signed with the companies of Kallas.
At the time, Jarbas told Piauí that he was a friend of Kallas and highlighted that there were no investigations against him at the Minas Gerais Attorney General’s Office. Kallas’ advisory only informed that “the mentioned trips are personal and vacation agendas, with longtime friends”
