The initiative is part of the FAS Indigenous Archery project, which has existed for 10 years and trains young people in communities and Indigenous Lands (TIs) in the region in archery as a sport.

Manaus (AM) – To strengthen the practice of archery among young indigenous people and encourage the training of new athletes, the Sustainable Amazon Foundation (FAS) is running a campaign to raise funds for the construction of the Indigenous Archery Training Center in the Amazon, in the community Kuanã indigenous people, located in the Sustainable Development Reserve (RDS) Puranga Conquista, in the rural area of Manaus. Donations can be made on the FAS website, using the link

The dream of building the Training Center gained national repercussion this Sunday (18), when FAS, together with indigenous archers and brothers, Graziela and Gustavo Santos, participated in the show The Wall, on the program Domingão com Huck. In the dynamics of the program, the team guaranteed R$82,906 in financial support for the project. The total investment required for the Training Center is R$400,000, including infrastructure, participation of athletes in championships, management of the project initiative, among others.

“The most important thing is the destination of this money, which is going to the Sustainable Amazon Foundation, which deserves all the support from civil society and governments, as it is very serious work carried out in the Amazon as a whole”,

commented presenter Luciano Huck during the program.

The initiative is part of the FAS Indigenous Archery project, which has existed for 10 years and trains young people in communities and Indigenous Lands (TIs) in the region in archery as a sport. In this way, in addition to practicing a sport, young indigenous people reconnect and delve deeper into an ancestral cultural tradition, generating a feeling of self-esteem and pride in their roots, explains the supervisor of the FAS Indigenous Agenda, Rosa dos Anjos, who was also in the Huck program, together with the FAS Superintendent of Sustainable Community Development, Valcléia Solidade.

“The construction of the Training Center will provide the opportunity for indigenous athletes to train and develop within their own community, close to their families, without having to travel to the capital. This is a demand from the athletes themselves and FAS is mobilizing to make this dream a reality. It is important for us to give a voice and listen to the needs of the people of the forest, only then will we be able to fulfill our mission, which is to take care of the Amazon”, says Rosa.

In a decade, Indigenous Archery has supported 37 athletes, who participated in 21 competitions and won 53 medals, 34 national and 19 international. Of the total, 20 were gold medals, 17 silver and 16 bronze. The project is in partnership with the Amazon Archery Federation (Fatarco). Among the athletes supported by the project are Graziela Santos, from the Karapanã ethnic group, who made history as the first indigenous person to represent Brazil in Archery at a Pan-American Championship. She is currently part of the Brazilian Archery Confederation and is fighting for a place in this year’s Olympics. Her brother, Gustavo, also accumulates medals in tournaments in the category.

At the end of the program, Vacléia Solidade made a public call for the Amazon. “We have to look back and say what moves us and what moves me is to say: look at the Amazon in a different way, because we deserve it and we are still very invisible”, she emphasized.
