Procon has been notifying Netflix against the end of password sharing in several states. After the units in São Paulo, Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná and Maranhão notified the company at the end of May, it was the turn of Procon-SC to open an administrative process last Tuesday (6).

In the decision issued by the Santa Catarina body, fines of R$ 500 may be applied to each complaint registered in the state, as soon as the company receives the notification. The process was opened after Netflix did not provide clarification to Procon-SC – the questions were asked in May.

Procon de SC understands that there is abuse by the streaming giant against consumers and encourages customers in the state to file a complaint through telephone 151. The precautionary measure aims to maintain the sharing of passwords and screens without additional charges, according to the agency.

In reply to Sheet, Netflix reinforced its statement of May 23, in which it announced that it would start sending emails to Brazilian subscribers who share the account with people from another house. The company did not comment on the process opened by Procon-SC.

Other notifications

In a note released on May 26 by the Department of Justice and Citizenship of Paraná, Procon-PR points out the existence of information on the company’s website that says “watch wherever you want”, which would lead the consumer to error.

Last Wednesday (7), the deadline for the company to respond to the Procon-SP notification, sent on June 1, expired. According to the body, the notifications aim to determine how the fight against the loan of passwords and the charging of R$ 12.90 for extra subscriber access will work, in response to consumer complaints.

Understand the end of Netflix password sharing

The new model that restricts sharing passwords on Netflix will limit family members or friends from using the same account if they live in different homes.

The subscriber will only be able to watch movies and series at home – however, the company has made it clear that it will be possible to see the content when users are out or traveling.

If someone else tries to access the same account from another location, they will be blocked and asked to transfer their profile to a new subscription, pay for themselves, or purchase extra subscriber access.

The purpose of the streaming company is to increase revenues and gain new subscribers. Netflix estimates that there are 100 million potential consumers worldwide.

The increase in subscribers has already been verified in the United States. According to research firm Antenna, Netflix recorded 100,000 daily subscriptions on May 26 and 27.
