President of Funai stands as a candidate for the STF – 08/27/2023 – Panel

In conversations with interlocutors from the Federal Supreme Court and authorities from Esplanada, the president of Funai (National Foundation for Indigenous Peoples), Joenia Wapichana, has put herself as a candidate for the vacancy that will open until October with the retirement of Minister Rosa Weber, who presides the STF.

Joenia argues that issues relevant to the indigenous population will only be prioritized when one of them becomes a court minister.

Funai’s president holds a law degree from the University of Roraima and a master’s degree in International Law from the University of Arizona, which would qualify her to occupy a vacancy in the Supreme Court – ministers are chosen from among citizens over 35 and under 70 years of age. age, remarkable legal knowledge and spotless reputation. Joenia, Rosa Weber and Minister Cármen Lúcia were together at the launch of the first Brazilian Constitution translated into the indigenous language (nheengatu), in São Gabriel da Cachoeira (AM). The name of Funai’s president is defended by representatives of the indigenous population, such as the general coordinator of the Indigenous Council of Roraima, Edinho Batista Makuxi.
