President felt pain on Monday, after infiltration made on Sunday

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva confirmed that he will undergo hip surgery in October this year. Lula has osteoarthritis in the head of the femur, which is wear on the cartilage that lines the joints, and has been complaining of pain more frequently.

“I want to have the surgery because I don’t want to be in pain. No one can work in pain all day. So, I feel that, sometimes, I am in a bad mood with my teammates”, she said during the Conversation with the President week program.

“Sometimes it’s visible on my face that I’m irritated, that I’m nervous. And then you become an uncomfortable person, you become a boring person, you become a person that no one wants to say ‘good morning’ to you, but afraid of being scolded. So I’m coming to the conclusion that I have to operate”, explained Lula.

Last Sunday (23), the president underwent a procedure at the Hospital Sírio-Libanês, in São Paulo. Lula made an infiltration in the region of the leg and hip to reduce the pain, but, according to him, this Monday, the hip started to hurt again. “And it looks like it’s started to hurt a little more,” he said.

Lula explained that he will undergo another infiltration and that he is already preparing for the surgery in October, with a regime and physical activities. The procedure, according to him, is reasonably quick (about two and a half hours) and recovery depends on his discipline in physiotherapy. While Lula is recovering, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin is in charge of the Presidency.

According to the president, the surgery date will be inserted between the international meetings that are already scheduled and that, according to him, are important trips and meetings in which he needs to be present.

The first commitment is the Amazon Summit, on the 8th and 9th of August, in Belém, Pará, which will bring together the presidents of the eight countries in the region. According to Lula, the objective is to build a joint position that will be taken to the United Nations climate conference, COP28, in the United Arab Emirates, between November 30th and December 12th.

“Brazil, the countries of South America that are part of the Amazon, plus the two Congos [República do Congo e República Democrática do Congo] that we invited to come to the meeting, plus Indonesia, are the countries that have a lot of forest reserves. So, what we want is to tell the world what we want to do with our forest and say what the world has to do to help, because they promised US$ 100 billion in 2009 and until today that US$ 100 billion has not come out”, he said.

From August 22 to 24, in South Africa, Lula will also participate in the BRICS Summit – a bloc that brings together Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. On September 9 and 10, the president will be in India for the G20 Summit, a group that brings together the main economies of the world. Brazil will receive the group’s temporary presidency for 2024.

On September 19, Lula opens the debate session of the General Assembly of the United Nations, in New York. On the occasion, according to him, a job generation program between the countries will also be launched.
