Pre-selected for the Oscar, Garoto dos Céus arrives in cinemas in the capital

Award-winning at Cannes and written and directed by acclaimed Swedish filmmaker Tarik Saleh, Sky Boy (Cairo Conspiracy) hits the big screens in Porto Alegre this Thursday (26). The film combines suspense and politics in a game of dispute for power in Egypt.

The film’s main character is Adam, played by Tawfeek Barhom, the son of a fisherman who receives a scholarship at Cairo’s most prestigious university, Al-Azhar, the epicenter of Sunni Islam’s power. The university’s Grand Imam, considered the highest religious authority in Egypt, has just died, and the process is underway to choose a new man for the post.

Saleh says the idea for the film came to him when he was rereading the novel. The name of the Rose, by Umberto Eco, which takes place in a medieval monastery, and decided to adapt the story to the Muslim context. This is Saleh’s 6th feature, which includes Dangerous Contractin addition to episodes of the American series Westworld and Ray Donovan.
