This Wednesday (8th) the federal government takes another step in actions to deal with the humanitarian crisis of the Yanomami. The Minister of Defense, José Múcio Monteiro, is traveling to Boa Vista with commanders from the Armed Forces to accompany the mega operation to remove miners from the indigenous land.
The role of the military in the region and in the Amazon as a whole is old — and so is the interest of the Armed Forces in defining policies for this area.
During the military dictatorship, the regime embodied the vision of occupying a space seen as empty for the defense of sovereignty against supposed external enemies. Even today, this thought can be seen in speeches and actions of the military.
Café da Manhã discusses the role of the Forces in removing invaders from the Amazon in conversation with João Roberto Martins Filho, a political scientist at the Federal University of São Carlos. He analyzes the extent to which the military’s Amazon strategy is related to the current crisis.
