Podcast: why the PF operation targeted Abin – Folha – 10/23/2023 – Podcasts

The irregular use of software capable of monitoring the location of any person, based on data sent by cell phone to telecommunications towers, became the target of an operation by the Federal Police — which targeted servers of the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin) that worked in the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

According to the investigations, employees would have “repeatedly” invaded the telephone network to access the geolocations of journalists, politicians, lawyers and Bolsonaro’s opponents. Of the more than 33 thousand hits, at least 1,800 would have targeted these people.

An internal administrative process was opened. On Friday (20), the PF carried out an operation in which two civil servants were arrested. Minister Alexandre de Moraes (STF) also removed the agency’s number 3, Paulo Fortunato Pinto. The case adds to other accusations of espionage by federal agencies in the Bolsonaro government — in March, a similar episode was revealed at the IRS.

According to Abin, the Israeli FirstMile program stopped being used in mid-2021. The agency stated that it is committed to legality and has always cooperated with the investigations. Under Lula (PT), the structure left the umbrella of the Institutional Security Office and passed to the Civil House.
