Podcast: why Lira wants urgency in the Fake News Bill – 04/25/2023 – Podcasts

The group of the mayor, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), pointed to the text known as the Fake News PL as a priority this week, even in the face of resistance from other parliamentarians and internet platforms —and with other important topics, such as of the likely installation of the CPMI on January 8, gaining momentum in Congress.

Lira and allies —which include the text’s rapporteur, Orlando Silva (PCdoB-SP)—, want to vote and approve this Wednesday (26) the urgency of the project, a requirement used to speed up the voting on a proposal. The president of the Chamber also hinted at the possibility of analyzing its merits later this week.

On the other hand, the opposition and some names from the governing base defend the installation of a special commission in which the text is debated more deeply — an argument that was reinforced in a recent communiqué by entities that represent big techs. For them, voting on the project under the direct influence of episodes such as the January 8 coup attacks and the recent attacks on schools is detrimental to the regulation of networks.

Lira says that the text has already been discussed in all aspects since it arrived at the Chamber, in 2020. The politician highlights, among his priorities, a device in the text that extends parliamentary immunity to the universe of social networks.
