The exchanges at the top of the Brazilian Intelligence Agency and the investigations into an alleged illegal espionage scheme set up in the agency during the Jair Bolsonaro (PL) government brought the debate about the role of Abin to the surface again.

The agency was founded in 1999, and in practice succeeded the National Information Service of the military dictatorship. Since its creation, it has been subordinated to military and civilian personnel — as in Lula’s third term, in which the PT member placed the body under the umbrella of the Civil House.

This week, when commenting on the Federal Police’s suspicions about a “parallel Abin”, the president said that he was “never sure” in relation to the agency and that he appointed delegate Luiz Fernando Corrêa as director because he “didn’t know anyone” there. Lula also made demands on the PF, which highlighted the dispute that the bodies are fighting under this administration.

In this Thursday’s episode (1st), Café da Manhã explains Abin’s role. Political scientist Priscila Carlos Brandão, professor in the history department at UFMG, discusses whether there is politicization in the agency and analyzes how the suspicion of the “parallel Abin” impacts the agency and its relationship with the government.
